Setting up Braudrist as a networked printer.

Note: In order to connect to the Braudrist printer, you need to be connected to the Hakkavelin network.

Ubuntu:

  1. Go to System Settings > Printing and click on “Add”
  2. Pick “Network Printer” and you should see “heima-pc” listed as an option; pick that. If not, pick “Find Network Printer” and type “192.168.1.215” into the Host bar.
  3. You should now see “HP LaserJet 6P” listed as an available printer. Click on “Forward” to continue.
  4. Pick something descriptive for a name (might I suggest Braudrist?) and click on “Apply”
  5. The computer will now ask if you want to print a test page. Ignore that shit and press “Cancel”.
  6. Now, rightclick on the printer that you just made and pick “Properties”
  7. In “Make and Model”, click on “Change...” and pick “Select printer from database”.
  8. Once your computer is done searching for available drivers, pick HP as the Make (should be the recommended one) and click on Forward.
  9. Pick “HP Laserjet 6p, hpcups” as your default driver (should be recommended but pick it, even if it isn't). Do not pick a driver that includes “PostScript” in its name! Click on Forward to continue.
  10. Pick the option “Try to copy...” and click on Forward.
  11. Tag “Duplexer Installed” so that you can print on both sides. Click on Apply to finish.
  12. Now, try printing a test page.
  13. If you get a connection error, look at the printer properties and make sure that the Device URI is exactly like this:
    dnssd://HP%20LaserJet%206P%20%40%20heima-pc._ipp._tcp.local./cups
  14. If the damn thing is still not connecting, then you need to click on “Change...” that's associated with the Device URI and redo step 2, opting for the “Find Network Printer” method.

Win:

  1. Go to Start > Devices and printers and click on “Add a printer”
  2. Choose “Add a network, wireless or Bluetooth printer”.
  3. If you're lucky, the printer “Braudrist on HEIMA-PC” should pop up as an available printer and in that case, you only need to click “Next” and you're done.
  4. If you didn't find automatically find the printer, choose “The printer that I want isn't listed” and write in the address bar “\\HEIMA-PC\Braudrist”, ignoring the qoutes.
  5. There's a chance the printer will complain that it can't find the Driver. In that case, you need to manually install it. Pick “HP” for manufacturer and “HP LaserJet 6P/6MP PostScript”.
  6. If you do not have “HP LaserJet 6P/6MP PostScript” listed as an available driver, the fastest way to solve that is to unplug the Braudrist from the host computer and plug it into your own computer. Windows Automatic Update should find and download the right driver for you.

Mac:
(Note. You might be able to figure out a faster way to connect to the printer, by adding it through Preferences > Printer but this way should guaranty a success)

  1. Open up a browser and type “localhost:631”
  2. You might have to open up the terminal and type “cupsctl WebInterface=yes” in order to access localhost.
  3. Click on Administration and choose “Add Printer”. You will be promted to insert your mac username and password.
  4. Look for “Discovered Network Printers:”; HP LaserJet 6P, should be listed there. Choose it and Continue.
  5. If the Printer is not listed as a Discovered Network Printer, pick “Internet Printing Protocol (ipp)” and type in “dnssd://HP%20LaserJet%206P%20%40%20heima-pc._ipp._tcp.local./cups” without the quotation marks. Make sure you wrote that exact address (copy/paste, for good measure).
  6. Feel free to name the printer any way you like (might I suggest Braudrist?) and press Continue.
  7. Make sure that the Manufacturer is HP and pick “HP LaserJet 6P – Gutenprint v5.2.3 (en)” from the list of Models. Number may vary but it shouldn't matter, as long as you pick Gutenprint; do not pick PostScript! Click “Add Printer” to continue.
  8. For general settings, pick A4 for Media Size and Long Edge for 2-Sided Printing. The rest of the settings should be fine.
  9. The printer should be set up now. Go to System Preferences > Printers, find the printer and print a test page.
