Installation

Note that these instructions are for stufur.dev.ru.is. You may need to adjust for other installations.

  1. Get an account from IT to download and license MS Windows Server 2008 standard (only x64!)
  2. Setup dhcp on eir to provide a consistent address
  3. Open Server Manager

Server Manager configurations

General

  1. Change Full Computer Name to "stufur.dev.ru.is"
  2. Leave Workgroup at "WORKGROUP" for now
  3. Install the latest patches and set it to autoupdate

Roles

  1. Click on "Add roles"
  2. Enable "Active Directory Domain Services"

Setup Active Directory Domain controller

  1. Open powershell
  2. dcpromo
  3. Standard mode (skip advanced)
  4. New forest
  5. FQDN of forest: RU.IS
  6. Forest Functional level: Windows 2003 Server
  7. Domain Functional level: Windows 2003 Server
    1. it will take a while poking at DNS
  8. Additiona domain Controllers: DNS Server
    1. Ignore the DHCP warning (not ok on a production server)
  9. If this is the first domain server, it will warn that it can't delegate because it can't find the parent zone. This is OK
  10. Accept the default locations for the Database, Logfiles and SYSVOL
  11. Set a Restore Mode Administrator password that is strong. Joe knows the current one, and they will be going into the vault soon
  12. Check the summary, and hi OK.
  13. Let the installation finish and reboot

More domain configuration in Server Manager

  1. Click on Change System Properties
    1. Fix the computer description to be in uppercase: STUFUR
    2. Click on the "Change..." button and hit OK at the warning
    3. Computer name: STUFUR
    4. Click on "More.."
    5. Primary DNS sufficx: DEV.RU.IS
    6. Uncheck "Change primary DNS suffix"
    7. OK

Create a new user

  1. Start menu > Administrative Tools > Active Directory Users and Computers
  2. Right click on RU.IS > New > User
  3. Fill in the fields

Adminstrative access

  1. right-click on user, pick "Member Of" tabs
  2. Add the user to these groups
    • DnsAdmins
    • Domain Users
    • Enterprise Admins
    • Group Policy Creators
