Social Phobia

The Fear of Social Situations

Phobic Properties

Social phobia is not an actual specific phobia, it's really an anxiety disorder, and is more commonly known as social anxiety disorder. Social phobiacs fear being scrutinized based on their performance in social situations and are often overly self-conscious.

Social phobia differs greatly between cultures, Eastern cultures are more worried about bringing shame to their families than themselves, also shyness is considered a positive trait in many Eastern cultures.

Connection to Virtual Reality

Research on social phobia show that VR therapy works as well as traditional CBT, however, most research have only been focused on one aspect of social phobia, i.e. speech anxiety, which is in itself a specific phobia (glossophobia).
