Spectrometer¶
Working with lists using this wiki is not fun at all. Will create a folder for FRs and DPs in subversion where I upload both a .tex file and .pdf. Looks good, easy to edit and we can track changes.

Functional Requirements (FR)¶
1. Measure light intensity at a fixed frequency (visible light)
(a) Split light
(b) Select frequencyi. Resolution
A. Wavelength selectable in 1-10 nm steps
(c) Measure the light intensity over the full spectrum of VIS light
i. Accurate -> no more than 1% off (5 nm)
ii. Reasonably fast -> each scan of the spectrum should take no more then XX second(s)
iii. Re calibration after scan should not be required.(d) Repeatable Measurements
i. Light intensity measured for a given sample at a fixed frequency should have minimal drift (< 1% ?) over the course of one experiment (2 hours)
2. Communicate data to student for plotting
(a) Store data
(b) Display data
3. Set up by instructor in < 15 minutes
4. Able to manufacture locally
5. User friendly for 1st year students
(a) Easy to calibrate
i. Calibrating the light sensor takes less than 1 min
ii. Zero the spectrometer
iii. No additional equipment required for calibration(b) Independent of computer, or plug & play
6. Expected lifetime 3-5 years
(a) Rugged
i. No irreversible damage from 15 cm drop to lab bench
ii. Chemical spillsA. Conductive liquids do not damage electronics
Design Parameters (DP)¶
1. Light source, diffraction grating, movable slit + sensor
Moved to correct distance and held there.
(a)
(b)
(c) Light sensor and diffraction grating
