Redesign of pelton turbine experiment

We decided on redesigning the pelton turbine experiment that is part of the Turbomachinery class.

What needs to be redesigned

  • Angular velocity measurements
In current state you need an external meter to do this. Our approach to the redesign is to have a sensor connected to a industrial computer and have the the display be a user interface to read the angular velocity.
  • Flow measurements
In current state you need to collect the water draining from the turbine in a set time frame to be able to calculate the flow rate. We will design a flow meter and have that also connected to the computer and display the flow rate on the screen.
  • Bearings
In current state the bearing system for the turbine wheel are two bearings close together. This is not sufficient for the bending moment on the shaft. We would like to have two bearings with more space between them, preferably on each side of the torque wheel so that you wont loose as much power in the bearings.
  • Power measurement
In the future it would be able to have a electric force sensor to measure the tork of the turbine and there for the power. It would require an analog extension on the industrial computer but it would be easy to implement. Because we only have few weeks to work on this we will probably not do this now, the most time consuming part would be making a amplifier for the sensor signal and making the measurement mechanism.
